Another perfect beach read from the USA Today bestselling author of While We Were Watching Downton Abbey.
Madeline, Avery, and Nikki are strangers to each other, but they have one thing in common. They each wake up one morning to discover their life savings have vanished, along with their trusted financial manager- leaving them with nothing but co-ownership of a ramshackle beachfront house.
Throwing their lots in together, they take on the challenge of restoring the historic property. But just as they begin to reinvent themselves and discover the power of friendship, secrets threaten to tear down their trust-and destroy their lives a second time.

I enjoyed this story and read the whole book which I don't do with many of the kindle books that I download. If a story doesn't keep me wanting to find out what happens next, I move on. In that respect this book was a winner. I DID want to find how things would work out for all the characters and also for Bella Flora. That being said I'm taking off two stars for the plot being a bit far fetched in some respects, particularly how these three women ended up being awarded this house when other investors got nothing. The way that was presented didn't ring true. I also thought all the sniping between Avery and Chase went on tooooo long and got tedious.
Overall, I'm still glad I read this story but I don't think I'd be tempted to buy any others in this series.
One more thing, the language was a bit rough at times but not over the top and it did fit in with the storyline. Some readers have complained about the vulgar language I've read a lot worse.

Ten Beach Road edition by Wendy Wax Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Enjoyed the writing style and (most of) the characters in this book. To this reader, Madeline Singer was the most developed of all the characters, and three strangers coming together, agreeing to work on a project together, and all of the nuances of learning to work together/form friendships seemed believable. Parts were laugh out loud funny. I enjoyed the process of these three women, Madeline, Avery and Nicole, learning to get past their very different backgrounds and lifestyles, finding the similarities they did share and building (literally) upon that. I also appreciated the author's working in of the complicated elements in each of their lives, which added additional challenges for the "team" as a whole.
Overall it was a great read. My one disappointment was the HUGE question which was never answered... given the number of people Malcom's ponzi scheme had seriously hurt or destroyed, why were these three women selected as co-owners of Bella Flora? It might make sense why he listed his sister, Nicole, as a co-owner, but why Avery and Madeline? It seems a pretty critical question to overlook. As a reader, I wanted the answer. Without it, the ending was less than satisfying.
Just my opinion.
I have to admit that I read a lot of the free or 99 cent books. They are ok, "while-the-time-away" stories. But when I picked up Ten Beach Road, I was very surprised at the quality of the author's writing. No recurring themes or sentences here! The entire premise of the book was very original and very well done right down to the details. (I read later about all the research she did - I believe it, as there were many details about many things and was all handled very, very well.) The three ladies are very different, but are thrown together out of necessity. This is the story of how they grow - in themselves and with each other - over a summer. The details the author puts in about each one makes them very interesting. The way she presents each lady makes it easy to remember who each one is and her circumstances and where her story left off the last time we heard from her. I never once felt confused or had to look back to refresh my memory. A sub-plot is thrown in that adds to the interest and then has an ending I never saw coming - actually two endings! She is an excellent author in every way. I haven't read any of her other books yet, but I am quite certain they must be very good also.
Definitely chic lit, but the characters are believable, and, though the situation isn't so believable, the author moves the story along so well that suspension of disbelief is easy enough. A step above most vacation reads, with a series that continues in the same manner if you want to know more about the characters or how their futures pan out. It's predictable enough to be comfortable, but well-written enough you don't count the hours you wasted reading it because it was fun or interesting enough to spend the time. The characters are pretty likable and you can understand why they do what they do (no eye-rolling for stupidity, which is a relief). I've read two others of the series and all were enjoyable reads. Kudos to the author for her skill -- she nicely walks the tightrope of women getting the job done without overly putting men and their abilities down and making them superwomen who could to it all themselves, each character has faults and most situations have a realism, no magic & happy-ever-after. Nice.
Bella Flora has fallen into disrepair after years of neglect. But after being conned of everything they own 3 strangers find the sad old mansion their only hope for the future. Being the grand old lady back to life takes everything they've got, as friendships are forged and Bella Flora flourishes. But the story doesn't end there - no spoilers here - but any hope for a happily ever after for The Old Girl and the women who have fallen in love with her will be hard fought against incredible odds.
Loved the story - diving into book 2 now!
I am a Real Estate Investor who has done many rehabs so I could relate to the ups and downs of the Bella Flora project. The characters were interesting and I cared about them. Lesson learned Never put all of your investment eggs in one basket. This book held my attention and made me find more time to read. I am recommending that his book to anyone who likes a good read. This was my first Wendy Wax book. I look forward to the rest of the series and many more Wendy Wax books.
I now have a new favorite author, and if stories centered on historical architecture is a genre, I'm in love with that too. I read several books each week, sneaking in time here and there. This story was not written by an author who writes a book a week. She obviously researched and drew from knowledgable sources. I live in the city of one of the main characters and was surprised at how well the author even understood our traffic cycles and airport quirks. I thank her for bringing professionalism and talent back to a profession that some have snuck their way into and mucked up. Have already purchased Book 2 in this series, though I will miss "the girls" and their beautiful home on the gulf.
